setting up raid config or or not?..Partions or not??

I'm going to get an internal hard drive and a 200GB Western Digital's 500 GB external drive, and wondering if I can, or should, go to a raid configuration. and / or partition is on them. I am new to this and want long-term data protection safeguards before !!.., (operating system) programs, photos, etc. ..... I'm tired of system crashes and leaving the whole '. That is why I want to do this right and to take all necessary precautions for this building and get the best PROFORMANCE: ... ie: moving to exchange or paging file and the operating system at different partions. Essentially to make the best use of software and hardware. all suggestions advice ROCK! thank you in advance

First, there are several considerations before setting up a RAID. You must choose the type of RAID you need.

RAID 0: Striped Set

RAID 1: mirrored disks

RAID2: Hamming code error correction

RAID 3: Check disc single group

RAID 4: independent reading and writing

RAID5: The proliferation of data / parity on all discs

Raid 6: bands with fixed parity

Raid 0.1 and 5 are most popular among home users. Assuming you have a RAID controller or a motherboard that supports RAID software, the next consideration is the number of discs you.

Raid 0, 1 minimum of two disks.

Raid 3, 4, 5 require minimum 3 discs,

Raid 6 requires 4 discs minimum.

Since you are dealing with only 2 discs you are limited to RAID 0 or 1. Then you need two players who are attached to the RAID controller. It is preferable to have drives that have the same size as in a raid table allows you to use only the amount of the smallest car. You would do better to the same internal drive and the creation of a RAID set. In your case, an external drive does not work.

Your best choice with the equipment you already is to partition the 200GB external hard drive with a partition and use a program like Norton Ghost to make a mirror image of your internal hard drive of this partition. The problem is that you have to do this often enough to keep your data.

There are many sources on the net-type table is best and why. If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me.

Raids tend to work when all the disks in the table are the same size and type.

I do not think you can make a table with the material that you have now.

What you can do, however, is take another 200GB internal hard drive, a RAID controller and hook in a RAID 1. This will give you a mirror data on your hard drive 200GB. you should read on RAID here ..
