File recovery on a corrupted partition?

Had a Maxtor One Touch II external hard disk, but now both Windows and Linux can not read data on disk and ask to be formatted.

Since it was a hard disk backup I really do not want to reformat but a low level format and data recovery I know is possible.

My main question, nobody knows any linux or freeware software that can recover these files?

PS. I tried to take the player on the USB and that only a normal Max10 ATA was able to plug in the slave to check if the casings circuit board was damaged.

SPA. The device manager in all OS recognizes the disc correctly, but simply sees it as non-formatted.

Anyone
