Can you recommend a good file / email server setup for my company?

I am looking for a file and mail server initial 3 people (all of whom already have their own laptop with Windows XP or Vista installed). The server will be used as a centre file storage for customers of sensitive documents. It will also be used to safeguard personal pc. I would also like to use it to treat all e-mails, the staff consulted on client pc via Outlook. I would like staff to access the file server from home, so they can access the company database. I am also seeking a second safeguard mechanism removable I will use to save the file server each week at home with me at the end of the day. So I suppose that the server must be robust piece of equipment with a big hard drive! Please can you suggest a solution, and illustrate the costs related to hardware, software, installation and deployment support. Sincerely

the office have an Internet connection with a ratio of 1:1 statement (up to 500 kbit / s) on transfers.

Yahoo Answers is probably not the best place for such a detailed display. There are many more technical forums that could help you.

There are many ways to do so.

1) By e-mail .. you want to Exchange 2003/2007 - this is a major expense and pledging to implement for only 3 people.
Personally, I recommend you contact your hosting company and see if they can create an alias e-mail / MX for your company that you will receive e-mail via Outlook through their e-mail servers. This will be much cheaper and less maintenance, and then buying Outlook and anti-virus company.
You can check periodically Outlook for email, and download it to a PST file stored on the server files are stored each night.

2) Buy a Beefy main server in Windows 2003/2008, then "virtualize" other servers.
It's better to have 1 server then do everything .. Virtualization, you can isolate the problems to 1 server, restart the server and only 1 or 2 services will be affected v. .. The fact that all services on 1 server and having to take both to fix 1 issue.
Ideally, the physical computer (called the host virtual) will do nothing - if the chances of it is incoherent are minimal.
You can use MS Virtual Server (2003) MS HyperV (2008) VMware Server, Virtual Box, or Zen all free to manage virtual servers (called virtual hosts)
I think you should be able to get leave with 8GBs of RAM on the virtual host.
3 Get at least 500 GB hard drives and put them in RAID 5, which can give you space 950GBs
Get double Quad processors
Get 2 cards
Each virtual client must be configured with 30Gb C: \ for the operating system and 120 - 200GBs D: \ for data (or less if his or DHCP DNS, etc.)
VMWare Server lets you set the maximum size of the virtual partition, BUT .. allocates space as it ineeds .. so that the actual size of the virtual file is small first .. but virtual computer thinks it has a total of 200Gbs - VMWare slowly increases file size, as required. So you can deceive virtual servers into thinking they have all 900GBs of space .. but the file size only to May 10-30gbs
Backups must be made on D: \ only with a scheduled task to copy the virtual hard drives to another place where customers get a virtual incoherent .

3) With regard to the file server .. I recommend the following folders
\ User
\ Common or public
\ Projects or ClientData
\ IT-only
\ Apps or software

folde names are not very explicit.
users - each person has access only to their own record
\ Common - everyone has access
\ Project - each department or group has access to just their region .. subfolders will be \ Accounting, \ HR, etc, then 1 file for each customer or project that you manage
\ Software - joint programmes such as Adobe should be open to everyone .. software that has license should be limited to computers

4) Buy Symantec Backup Exec to perform backups. Symantec also has the client software that you can install on laptops and support them.
Avoid Symantec Protection Continue "product .. I saw a large number of posts to people with problems
Buy Norton Ghost Server for laptops and imaging MS Sysprep to make a universal image.

5) You can experiment with some online storage via the web and see how much cost. 500Kbps upload is a little slow maybe .. to experiment with only download files

Expect to pay about $ 4000 for hosting virtual server.

As for a remote connection to the server .. You can configure Microsoft VPN, which requires 2 fixed IP addresses or you can configure Remote Desktop Connection and install optional web interface and set up port forwarding on port 3389 on your router / firewall
Employees could then struck a website or subdomain, say that remote.yourdomain.com and have forwarded the requests to Remote Desktop Terminal Server and allow people to distance applications on the server.
If not, then VPN enabling them to obtain a secure connection internal and intellectual property to access files remotely as if they were in office.
or other method of work for a small office.

HEY .. if you happen to be in the region of Sacramento, Calif. - I'm available for consultanting

If this is that small, I suggest outside research. Even a plan of webhosting (most already come with e-mail) should suffice. In addition, it will be accessible everywhere.

in terms of equipment.
I suggest get price of each large company there, Dell, HP, IBM. They offer all different levels of various equipment and prices. You can use their prices against each other for prices a little better. The first thing you need to know is what type of software that will be before buying the equipment. In this way, it allows you to adjust the equipment-specific software you have chosen

in terms of software. your search for a solution. e-mail, file server, backup, so I assume that you are the only technician, you will be responsible for its maintenance. I would not suggest a course with microsoft / ibm solution, and so on. Because they require much training to work properly.

I suggest something with open source. There are many different applications, and mix well match. Also there is a huge community around these products. This is useful because there are many experts who can help you if you encounter problems.

I would like to study a society clarkconnect. They are a source Linux server. They provide a very scalable, robust solution. you can combine the various elements they offer. You can also buy support low-cost reasonable. They have a lot of community support. They also sell turnkey systems.

- I use the original version, and I am very impressed by the features and capabilities of this software includes packages.
