Can someone explain how to set up a server that can communicate with PC's and Macs (one Mac will be offsite)?

Here's the scoop:
I am a Web developer, but my boss wants me to work to build a server of the office that will serve as backup for PC and Mac desktop. We need to back up large video files and be able to access video files, if necessary. One computer is a Mac, which will be at a distance (out of the office) and have to connect via the Internet. Being a Web developer, I have no idea where to start and would appreciate any assistance in this area.

Could you also make recommendations on a machine, software, accessories, and schedule that I could go back to my boss?

Thank you for your time.

Sounds like you need a NAS server if anything you want east safeguard. Both Macs and PCs can access the network drive. They are employed to Unix OS, Microsoft and Apple talk to him.

CNET reviewed some servers SIN:

You can also buy a server, such as a Dell PowerEdge 840 with MS Small Business Server for network shares. Mac and PC work well with Microsoft Active Directory for sharing data. Use the utility directory on the Mac to configure it to be part of Active Directory.

See if your router has an option VPN and if yes ... allow Mac VPN network in the distance so that it can access files. If it does not have a VPN, you'll need to buy a camera VPN Internet: D-Link is a pretty cheap.

Here's how to configure the VPN IPSEC for OSX 10.4.

10.5 per its various OSX:
