Can anyone recommend any good backup/folder synchronising prograps for Windows? Preferably free...?

Can anyone recommend a good backup or file synchronization programs for Windows? Preferably free ... I need something that goes regularly back up specific folders on my computer. I am sick and tired of losing important work! Also, does anyone know how to fight the mistake that you get on Windows when you try copying a file with a very long name to an external hard drive for example? When Windows tells you that you "MAY NOT COPY", the entire process of copying is stationary! Why is not this file should be ignored? Or is it useful for software too?
Or even a program that will kill 2 birds with one stone?
Thanks!

SyncBack is free

Pro version has more options - for the differences, see here

I am not sure about the problem with filenames to Windows, except in the length is 255 characters, but it applies to the entire journey, not just the file name. The best and shortest leave no loopholes - preferably use underscores. More free
sync / backup tools can be found here

Synchronization more specialized tools allow wildcard, which allows you to specify what happens when the file errors are encountered .
