What is the best way to back up MiniDV tapes?

I have a lot of hours of video footage which I hold on MiniDV cassette. I want to return these firmly in place and keep them for future use. I have an external hard disk of 500 GB, which should, ideally, I would like to use as backup media. What conversion software can I use? This software will allow me to store the data on my external drive? If I hold data on the external drive will I be able to view images easily on DVD so in the future? Thank you in advance for any advice that may be offered.

The band itself format exponentially more reliable then any hard drive. Suffice it to protect your bands heat, humidity, dust and magnetic fields and they will last forever.

Believe Fortune-500 companies (including credit card companies) using DLT (digital linear tape) discs and tapes to safeguard their most important data.

To get to a file, you must enter via firewire card and capture software. I use Nero 6, which allows you to record in a compressed format. Avi file, perhaps 5-6 Go for 2 hours of film. That would be at least 200 hours of video on your hard drive. For the future, you can write to DVD at your convenience
