What is the best way of creating an image of your PC hard drive in case it fails? Then write to a CD or DVD?

Our PC at home is running Windows XP with Adobe Reader, MS Office, and a large number of tax software and data. I can not remember the size of hard disk. It would be good if we can create an image of it in case of disk failure. There were a couple of times that the PC has obtained a large number of bugs and crashed. I had to rebuild from scratch. It is not too bad for the operating system and some software standard, but it took some time to get the party Internet at work and it took some time to re-install the software on the tax - . If we have a backup of our hard disk (C:), it would be wonderful. That way, if something happens, we can restore it with a minimum of time.

Is there a freeware to do?

Thank you in advance.

use Norton Ghost to clone your drive. their antivirus is high time PANTS, but Ghost is a little kit.

-I use Symantec, s Ghost, and I put images on another
hard drive.
Yes, you can burn to DVD, s, but when restoring image
time, so much quicker with the HD.

Acronis True Image (ATI), Norton Ghost 10, XXClone (which is good for hard disk drive copy, and it's free). The first two programs are expensive, the latter is free and extremely easy to use. However, you can not save on a CD with the last. The first two, you can save on CD, but only after a return to a hard disk. The CD / DVD option is much slower than the transfer of another disk drive.
