What is a good method to synchronize a specific file structure in windows XP as a backup?

answering to comment, octavius:
I want to have an automatic backup once a day to an external hard drive. I have 5 different folders where the bulk of the data is in. What software is the best and what is cheap (free) software and good?
I second the suggestion SyncToy as mentioned above. Check the help file to see how to program. Pretty simple.

If you have XP Pro (unlike XP), you also have "Backup" as an option. Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Backup.

If you are comfortable with the command line, Robocopy (free) Microsoft is VERY slick, but for the admin types. You can find in the MS Server Resource kits (

Here are two utilities that can help you:

SyncToy for Windows XP (FREE)

SyncBackSE (There is a free version)

It is a bit stronger than SyncToy, because it lets you exclude certain file types (based on the extension), where SyncToy only allows you to exclude files. I used SyncBack

for a long time, perhaps a year. This is a very good program.
