Looking for an external hard drive for backups. Which is better "IDE" or "SATA" format and what is the diff ?

I have an old but fully loaded Dell Inspiron 9100 Laptop and the need to put in place a system backup on a regular basis. I am currently using "Acronis' backup software. I had some problems with none other than Norton products. I was hoping that the software Acronis could "wake up" the laptop from my mode, perform a backup and return to standby mode. Unfortunately, Acronis is unable "wake up" my system. Fortunately, it does do a wonderful job of creating disk images. However, I am still hoping to find a program that can wake up my system, make a backup and allow the laptop to go into standby mode. I am told that I should just leave the laptop on 24 / 7, but it is quite warm and waste electricity is turned on all the time. Thank you for your comments or suggestions. Steve

Actually IDE is not yet exceeded that, I still buy them on a regular basis for coins at the place I work at. IDE and SATA are currently very roughly comparable to the 160/250gb range. They both mean reading at 7200rpm which is the same speed. The only thing is that SATA has more potential to be read from faster because there is more bandwidth available to the driver. SATA is an improvement, but by no means FDI is still outdated.

The main point is that it doesn't matter to an external driver, as the speed (transfer speed) of a car if EXTERNAL IDE or SATA is going to be limited because of the USB connection Firewire or for the reader. Both FireWire and USB are slower than the IDE connection. Just make sure that the drive you buy if she says she SATA or IDE comes with a case or external connection, or you buy one. You can also buy external hard drives preassembled. Just know that there is no outside IDE or SATA ports available on the type of laptop you have.

IDE is a very outdated technology and you do not have to buy to build more. S-ATA will give you transfer speeds much higher.

Sorry, I do not know anything about backup software.

Edit: By the numbers, the EDI supports up to 16 megabytes per second, SATA supports up to 350 megabytes per second depending on the standard.

With an external drive of the difference is not that great. Opt for a good price. Best prices through

IDE and SATA are both good for external backups. Everything goes through the USB cable anyway. The prices of usb extrenal units are very good at the moment. Go for a reliable or known brands.

It is not easy to wake up a laptop in standby mode. There are certain parameters, eg for ethernet network card or mouse or keyboard - you can set it so that the work on such a device wakes up your laptop,

IDE is the desktop our most popular hard disk device connection interface. SATA is gaining popularity because it's a new interface, it is smaller, medium means faster and easier to implement.

Kar EXTERNAL devices go, it is not really matter, just as long as the hard disk is that you get the same interface as the attachment you receive.

Unless your laptop has a port ESATA, is the most likely to be USB 2.0

There are several reasons for this: The bottleneck
d 'stranglehold on the speed will be hard on your laptop.

SATA tend to be more expensive, but not always. (But they are worth sure that the speed boost)

Put your own car in your case, you save about 20 bucks this way.
