If you have a raid configuration, you can set up a mirror raid configuration and will be automatic. :) As far as free software goes, the safeguarding of public services which are free tend to be malfunctioning. You can use emergency windows. Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Backup Just a reminder, you need two copies of Windows if you install on 2 disks (even if it is inside a computer case).
