I do not want to spend the dollars on an external hard disk usb if I can use a cable with a hard drive of a computer. I do not have a desktop computer, but my idea is to connect the laptop to a simple hard drive. I need the right cable and software. Any ideas?

try cross UTP cable, as sharing files between your laptop or desktop computer to burn the file to cd / dvd

Can not do it. A desktop computer's hard drive requires two cables. One to connect the drive for statistical purposes and generally IDE and SATA. You can get a conversion from cable to go to your portable USB, but you will also need a power cord that comes from food. Thats the cable, you do not. Laptop power is inaccessbile and you must have a PC power supply to get the hard disk to turn on.

use a Data Link USB 2.0 File Transfer Cable

? You may want to try using a backup software, such as StompSoft PC Backup. This allows you to back up to CD / DVD, hard disk, tape, networks etc. .. As far as connectivity goes, you have a lot of trouble getting your laptop to recognize your "simple hard drive."
