I am currently using Vista, backup and restoration program to a real computer backup. He said around 15-20 DVD. I intend to burn them on DVD and copy them to a 500GB hard drive. I do not intend to store them plain, so I want to compress (and more likly encrypting). What is the best compression software at this location (either free or cheap; please-no software $ 100). I'm not really looking zip only because it gathers the files.

RAR is supposed to be the best compression format.
7-zip compression allows a loss of formats and is free. Try and see epxerimenting compression formats that works best.
BTW, why not save it directly to an external hard drive? Backups are only worth doing if you do it regularly, burning 20 DVDs on a regular basis is time consuming and costly. Having devoted an external hard drive backup would be less costly in the long term.

Zip also compresses files as well. The best compression windows, you will find RAR east. It is also time to pack and unpack its highest settings, but is an exchange, you'll have to do with any technology .. rar victory is the most common application, I think there is even a free trial timed.

7-Zip is totally free, it compresses and encrypts the files. 7-Zip includes many compression formats, not just ZIP, RAR, or 7Z.

I know that you did not want a zip, but I recommend Win Zip zip because it really keeps the files smaller and easier to find. Sorry I could not answer that you wanted to watch me in my idea ...
