Restoring or recovering data lost during a crash using windows98?

Hi, someone can save me quite a headache and working hours redo old? Our computer that we use for printing labels for placing on our bakery crashed yesterday and label data was lost. I have a back in place which I tried to recover, but a message is something like "backup set contains the types of files unknown, please check and try again" A very small number labels were resored way, but short of all that should be there. The backup disks are fairly well used and it could be that they are past, although the data seem to be there when I hit "explore". Someone at the bakery said that WindowsXP has a feature that can restore data on its position a day or two earlier. Since our label computer is fairly old and runs on Windows 98 my question is whether this function is available on 98 or if it is a program I can install to do so? A box of baking goodies to the success of answering that can help me solve this problem: o)
thank you very much,
Best wishes, Paul

(From old blog's comments)
Hi, your'e will have some probs get these files.
xp method that you mention is a system of remediation, which is unfortunately not on win98.
First, I suggest you stop adding information on your PC that any information that you write May and crush the same place containing the files you need.
It makes you sound as May have lost the program that opens the print data in a format that your backups are mine. what do you normally use to open the files?
May Try reinstalling help.

The second way can always be for you to send me your backup disks and I'll see what I can do!
Food for thought perhaps.
good luck.
