how can i get data off this 12-year-old tape?

i plugged an old tape drive to a machine win98. I did not use the band since 1996. I know that the tape is old, but I have not renounced its subject.

I use the same tools to recover data. Here is what happened in the order it happened:

1) I scanned the tape for backups
2), he said no, please consult catalogues
3) I tried a test backup
4) safeguarding showed the former catalogues and asked me where I wanted to save the new backup
5) i cancelled the test backup
6) I looked for catalogues again, but now the software tells me that the tape is illegible or not formatted

no matter what I try to do now, I get the message that the band can not be read. how was I able to see the catalogues?

someone has ideas? There is perhaps cleaning I can apply to the band? any ideas would be great.

or .. Are there any generic software that can retrieve data from tape drives?

video is not a good storage medium to long term, it is possible that the data has degraded to the point where the tape is illegible. I had a 11,111 which was approximately 15 years, I took a Wal-Mart and put it on a CD for me, then I was able to install it on my pc try. It really works Good Luck
